Abstract

This thesis investigates xiangchou (nostalgia/ homesickness) and solastalgia (homesickness at home) as the typical 'structure of feeling' and of rhetoric in 21st century Chinese ecofiction. It argues that environmental degradation has destabilized the 'green imagination' of xiangchou, which has evolved into a fundamental, psychophysical sense of displacement. The thesis approaches issues of environmental injustice through three key dimensions of ecological crises: extinction, deforestation, and pollution. The examined works include those by Jia Pingwa, Ye Guangqin, Alai, Jiang Rong, Chen Qiufan, and Hao Jingfang.
