Abstract

In this article we discuss women’s participation in and contributions to the
mathematical sciences in Australia, focusing on efforts to remove barriers to
participation, and in particular WIMSIG, the Women in Mathematics Special
Interest Group of the Australian Mathematical Society. We are proud of and
grateful for what women in Australia have achieved in mathematics1. This article
is the outcome of an invitation to us from the US Association for Women in
Mathematics (AWM) to contribute a chapter [18] about the Australian experience
to the book [6] which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the AWM. The current
article is an expanded and revised version of our chapter in the AWM book, and is
published at the suggestion, and with the permission, of the AWM.We are grateful
to the AWM for permission to publish this version of our article in the Gazette.
