Abstract

"Will Ye No Come Back Again: Rediscovering the Sobieski Stuart Brothers through their Poetry and Prose' explores the literary contributions of John and Charles Allen between 1819 and 1880. It examines the brothers' history and lineage, placing them firmly in an historical context, before offering the first in-depth analysis of their acknowledged poetry and prose, and revealing a further twenty-nine, hitherto unacknowledged pieces of prose now attributable to them. Concluding with an analysis of their unpublished works, and a thematic analysis of their entire corpus, the thesis re-evaluates the often-overlooked contribution the pair made to C19th Scottish and British fiction.
