Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) (with less than 250 employees) are as important sources of innovation, and for them innovation seems to be a factor of survival. For example, the SME Observatory highlighted in the 2008 edition of its annual study that innovative SMEs are more sustainable than non-innovative SMEs: according to this study, three out of four innovative SMEs are still active after five years, whereas the INSEE estimates the survival rate of all SMEs at 50% on the
same period (OSEO, 2008). The importance and vitality of these SMEs is as highlighted in the OECD report on SMEs and innovation (OECD, 2010) or by the Annual Report of the National Council of Industry in 2013 (CNI, 2014).
