Abstract

The VOTable format is now an agreed upon XML standard for representing tabular data in the VO context. Tabular data are an important part of the data exchanged between all participants in the Virtual Observatory: such representations include data extracted from catalogues and surveys, calibration parameters and data, results of modelling applications, etc. An accurate description of what these data actually represent - the metadata - is an essential requirement in the VO context where the data are coming from many sources and are to be processed by many applications, in fully automatic procedures.
