Abstract

Learning French in Australia is part of a long British tradition and French was the first foreign language taught there. Since the 2000s and the implementation of the New Colombo Plan in 2014, the Australian government has launched a national advocacy for Asian languages to strengthen ties and Australians' engagement with their 'northern' neighbor, Asia. Due to its location geographically, it is evident that studying Asian perspectives is essential for the future from Australia. However, Australia's proximity to its 'eastern' neighbors, the Pacific, some of which are French-speaking countries, is rarely highlighted in official documents and in learning French. This article will highlight the importance and relevance of reviewing the way culture French-speaking is taught in Australia to give greater recognition to our neighbors of the Pacific and will present some innovative projects recently undertaken by university professors in Australia, including a study program in Polynesia French.
