Abstract
The theoretical and methodological contributions springing from sociolinguistics can be explored in the field of phonetics. It is possible to find significant social patterns through the analysis of specific variables. The present study addresses the phoneme /ʧ/ –traditionally classified as the fortis voiceless palatoalveolar affricate– in speakers of Argentine Spanish with a Porteño accent. This paper hypothesises that this phoneme may have allophonic realizations that differ in the duration of the fricative component, as well as in their place of articulation. The results and conclusions will allow the generation of new hypotheses about the relevance and connection of these findings in the field of contrastive phonetics and the teaching of foreign language phonetics.
