    Abstract

[Truncated abstract] Title: Validation and modification of the existing injury severity instruments using the major trauma population in the Perth Metropolitan area Aims This thesis investigated the predictive performance of existing injury severity scoring tools and the importance of the injury severity score as a risk factor for mortality. This thesis also investigated the impact of different versions of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) on the quality assessment of the trauma care of an individual hospital. To undertake this research, the integration of the two main AIS versions was imperative to allow comparison of data using these two relatively incompatible systems. I aimed to systematically review published studies regarding the predictive performance of injury severity scoring tools; to describe the AIS versions that are currently in use in regional trauma registries (RTRs) worldwide; to develop and validate a mapping table to integrate different AIS versions; to compare this mapping table with other mapping tables; to determine the predictive performance of injury severity scoring tools using local data; to compare the quality assessment of trauma care of hospital based on the AIS 98 with that based on the AIS 2008 and to perform a risk factor analysis for mortality with a focus on the importance of an injury severity score as a predictive variable in relation to the time of deaths after traffic accidents...
