Abstract

This PhD project mainly focused on two promising coal fly ash utilization technologies: zeolite synthesis and geopolymer production. High quality zeolites have been successfully synthesized from both pulverized coal combustion fly ash and circulated fluidized bed combustion fly ash. Synthesized zeolite demonstrated high removal efficiency of strontium and cesium from aqueous solutions. Synthesis process with integration of waste water recycling was designed to minimize the waste water generation and alkali consumption. The use of fly ash for geopolymer production was also investigated. We explored a new economical and environmentally-friendly curing method that harnesses solar radiation to achieve accelerated geopolymerization process.
