Abstract

This paper studied the effects of sandblasting and aramid fiber toughening on the bonding properties of CFRP/Al bonding joint. With the sandblasting parameters fixed, the CFRP/Al bonding joints were subjected to short Kevlar fiber reinforced adhesive and short Kevlar fiber interfacial toughening, and single lap shear test was performed. Based on the digital image correlation technology and scanning electron microscopy observation results, the failure mechanism of CFRP/Al bonding joint was discussed and analyzed. The influence of different treatment methods on toughening effect was further explained through theoretical analysis. The results showed that both sandblasting and aramid fiber toughening could improve the bonding properties of CFRP/Al bonding joint. Compared with the control group, the peak load, shear strength, failure energy and strain at break of CFRP/Al bonding joint after sandblasting were increased by 41%, 44%, 70% and 29% respectively. The peak load, shear strength, failure energy and strain at break of CFRP/Al bonding joint toughened with aramid fiber were increased by 72%, 80%, 168% and 67% respectively. At the same time, it was found that the interface between Al and adhesive was the main weak part of CFRP/Al bonding joint. Sufficiently strengthening this weak part was the primary issue in improving the bonding properties of CFRP/Al bonding joint.
