Abstract
Environmental-friendly farming practices are needed to encourage farmers to improve soil health and crop production. Use of a multispecies microbial inoculant and a rock mineral fertiliser (a proprietary combination of various fine mineral ores) was investigated for wheat growth and development. Multispecies microbial inoculant with rock mineral fertiliser increased growth, nutrient uptake and yield of wheat. Sequencing of 16S rRNA identified Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria as key phyla in the rhizosphere soil. The microbial inoculant and fertiliser treatments were shown to influence the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria. However, the effectiveness and risk of microbial inoculation need further investigation in broadacre agriculture.
