Abstract

Urban air quality, impacted by particulate matter (PM) from various sources including road traffic and industrial activities, poses significant health and environmental concerns. The results show that both Bhopal and Dewas exceed the recommended PM2.5 safe limit of 60 Μg/m3, with levels of 354.48 and 139.56 Μg/m3, respectively and the PM10 levels exceed the prescribed limit of 100 Μg/m3, with Bhopal and Dewas recording 436.64 and 412.18 Μg/m3, respectively. Another study focused on assessing air quality near the Kolar Road construction site in Sainath Nagar, Kolar Road, Bhopal, using a DustTraKTMII Aerosol Monitor. Data analysis from January 19 to 22, 2024, revealed in Figure 20.5 that consistently elevated PM2.5 levels exceeding the 60 Μg/m3 safe limit, with maximum levels of PM2.5 reaching up to 1,040 Μg/m3. Additionally, Figure 20.6 highlights a notable trend of increased PM2.5 levels from 6 PM to 12 PM. While road construction supports infrastructure development and economic growth, heightened PM levels pose serious health risks, including respiratory issues and reduced visibility, which can lead to accidents. Urgent measures are needed to mitigate PM emissions at construction sites, as indicated in this study.
