Abstract

The stand-alone conductor is a relatively new addition to classical music. Widely accepted as a requisite role in orchestral performance since the mid-nineteenth century, the role has gone through significant developmental changes. The maturation of the conductor has also seen an increasing mystification surrounding their function and those who stand upon the podium. Using historical data to explore the changing relationship between conductors and their ensembles together with past societal influences offers a unique insight. A model for understanding conducting is proposed and tested that could form the basis for further research while promoting future pedagogical approaches to the artform.
