Abstract

The motivational phase of the Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model of Suicidal Behaviour suggests a linear pathway to suicidal ideation and intent (O'Connor & Kirtley, 2018). The present thesis proposes a novel measure of rumination that considers factors antecedent to suicidal ideation and then tests the temporality of constructs within the motivational phase (rumination, entrapment, suicidal ideation, and suicidal intent) using a cross-lagged longitudinal design and an experimental paradigm. Results suggest a modified framework that considers non-linear pathways and feedback loops for how the motivation for suicide develops. Potential points for targeted intervention are discussed.
