Abstract

This PhD thesis reports a systematic investigation into the effect of biochar in enhancing H2 and CH4 production in two-phase anaerobic digestion. It was found that the Fe-containing minerals, played a key role in promoting VFAs production and enhancing Clostridium butyricum population resulting in increased H2 production and in promoting VFAs degradation and Clostridia and Methanosaeta growth, resulting in improved CH4 production. Biochar was also found to support high organic loading rate operations in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process. It was also demonstrated that biochar can be an effective adsorbent for H2S removal from the biogas.
