Transverse free vibration of axially loaded tapered friction piles in heterogeneous soil

Abstract

This paper introduces a new theoretical model for obtaining the natural frequency and mode shape of tapered piles in heterogeneous elastic soil subjected to axial static loading. Friction resistance at the pile-soil interface that is significant for long friction piles, yet not covered in the literature, is considered in the model. The differential equation governing the transverse free vibration of the pile-soil system is derived with associated boundary conditions and is solved numerically using Runge-Kutta method combined with the determinant search technique. Numerical examples are presented to elucidate the effect of the tapering and skin friction of pile, pile-soil relative stiffness, soil heterogeneity and axial force as well as the degree of end restraint.
