Abstract
Cellular Agriculture and Biofabrication promise a future of abundance without consequences, through the manufacturing of animal and plant products without the whole organism and/or its sentiency. This proposition opens up a range of ontological and philosophical questions regarding our relationships to both concepts of nature and life itself. The project aims to tease out questions regarding the ways in which new technologies such as Cellular Agriculture and Biofabrication will require us to reformulate our relationships to non-human life forms, nature and life itself.
This artwork starting point emerged from books by E. Lankester titled “The Uses of Animals in relations to Industry of Man” (1876) and “On Food” (1881) in which Lankester outlines the use of animal parts and secretions for human ends. Some of Lankester’s examples will be contrasted with current Cellular Agriculture and Biofabricated products.
