The therapeutic effect and mechanism of actions of natural compounds in osteoporosis

    Abstract

    An imbalance of bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts leads to bone diseases , such as osteoporosis, osteopetrosis and Pagers disease of bone. In order to identify new potential treatments against bone loss diseases, we screened hundreds of natural compounds isolated from both native Australian plants and from a Chinese natural compound library. This study has identified several natural compounds which have inhibitory effects on osteoclasts in vitro and/ or in vivo. Our study suggests that four natural compounds berberine sulfate, dihydroartemisinin , fangchinoline and cumambrin A are potential therapeutic candidates as anti-resorptive drugs for osteolytic bone diseases.
