Abstract

The symbiotic relationship between crop species and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi is crucial for plant health, productivity, and environmental sustainability. AM fungi play a significant role in alleviating cadmium (Cd) stress in crops. AM fungi can enhance the uptake of essential nutrients such as phosphorus, which can help to reduce the uptake of Cd by plants. AM fungi can also improve plant tolerance to Cd stress by enhancing antioxidant activity and reducing oxidative stress in plant tissues. AM fungi enhance the detoxification of Cd in plant tissues by increasing the activity of enzymes involved in Cd detoxification. The presence of AM fungi can improve soil health, which contributes to the reduced Cd stress in crops. The remediation mechanism and application scenarios of AM fungi to Cd stress in crops was summarized and the relationship between the combined synergistic performance of other alleviating agents and AM fungi in Cd detoxification was discussed. The chapter also proposed challenges and future directions on the role of AM fungi in the alleviation of Cd stress in crops.
