The role of biomechanics in tendon homeostasis and its impact on tendon scaffold development

Abstract

Tendon injuries and tendinopathy are one of the most common orthopaedic condition in our community. Inappropriate mechanical loading exerted on tendon in our daily life is a potential culprit. Using advanced bioengineering methods, this thesis addressed how mechanical loading regulate tendon homeostasis and attempt to develop a principle of mechanobiology of tendon to guild clinical rehabilitation of tendon. A naturally derived collagen rope that can provide mechanical support for tendon and ligament regeneration was also developed. Both preclinical and clinical outcomes of this collage scaffold demonstrated the excellent biomechanical and biological performance for tendon and ligament regeneration.
