Abstract

In the Lambda Cold Dark Matter cosmological model, mergers play a crucial role in galaxy formation. Traces of mergers and ongoing interactions are observed in the diffuse stellar component surrounding galaxies: the intra-halo light (IHL). The IHL encodes important information on the formation of galaxies and their dark matter haloes by providing an observable record of their merger history. In this thesis, we use cosmological simulations to characterise the IHL of simulated galaxies whose masses range from that of the Milky Way up to those of massive galaxy clusters, investigating how the IHL is linked to galaxy assembly history.
