    Abstract

An ageing population in conjunction with a steady decline in our
labour force in the over 55s age group, is set to culminate in a massive
increase in Australia's retired population over the next twenty to thirty
years. To date, little research has been produced which identifies the real
meaning of the impact of retirement. Most studies have merely succeeded
in proving their pre-determined hypotheses. The results have been
equivocal to the extent that they have tended to look at factors affecting
adjustment to retirement in isolation rather than looking at the
combined effects or the interrelationships of relevant factors.

It was proposed that this study would contribute greater knowledge
and understanding into what the impact of retirement means, with
particular emphasis being placed on the transition/ adjustment phase.
Such knowledge and understanding is considered essential in order
that the inevitable problems that will face our future generations of
    retirees can be properly addressed.
