Abstract
What role can history play in Futuring Craft? Historians claim “what happened then matters now.” But does it? If indigenous craft is collected and repurposed by Western artists and collectors, does it matter in any sense that their original makers and users would recognize? In exploring the impact of colonialism on the Western system of the arts, can the influence of indigenous artifacts be granted significance beyond the reprehensible term s of cultural appropriation? Must they be denied all agency upon other cultures? I argue they must not.
