Abstract
This study examined the historical background to the teaching of history in Singaporean secondary schools and the current
concerns of secondary school teachers in the teaching of the subject. The study was conducted by examining historical and
recent official documents, and by semi-structured interviews with practising history teachers. Findings of the study indicate that
the economic interests of the country often hindered the development of the secondary history curriculum, and that a gap has existed between the planned curriculum and the taught curriculum. As such, this study has identified implications for history teachers' work and their professional development.
