Abstract

The Dos and Don’ts of pituitary surgery presented in this chapter outline key points to aid in successful surgery, and highlight the pitfalls to avoid in order to reduce complications. This chapter discussed the principles of the endoscopic technique for pituitary surgery, and the importance of establishing a multidisciplinary pituitary team with adequate subspecialty training. Preoperative planning is paramount in avoiding the unexpected. This includes comprehensive patient workup, detailed knowledge of the anatomy, and understanding of the reconstructive options. Preoperative imaging and detailed scrutiny of the tumor helps to formulate a step-by-step approach to tumor clearance and reconstruction. The surgical technique is described methodically, with tips for each step of the procedure.
