Abstract

The medical workforce shortage in rural and remote areas is a global issue of concern, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia. This thesis aims to describe the recruitment, development, and retention of the medical workforce and the factors influencing medical workforce recruitment and retention in Maluku. A mix of research methods in five interrelated studies was undertaken to address the research questions. The findings suggest that sustained collaboration between medical schools and local government implementing relevant strategies is required in order to improve the recruitment and retention of RR physicians.
