Abstract
The performance of preloaded skirted circular foundations in normally consolidated clay was investigated by means of numerical and experimental modelling. A framework to estimate the time-dependent vertical capacity of skirted circular foundation was established from numerical insights into the consolidation hardening behaviour of the soil, and considering a variety of magnitudes and durations of vertical preloading. The framework was subsequently extended to combined VHM loading conditions and validated by a large number of centrifuge tests.
