Abstract
Apples, the second highest consumed fruit worldwide, are an important contributor to the intake of flavonoids, dietary components linked with cardiovascular disease prevention. Higher apple intakes are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseaselikely due to beneficial effects on vascular function, blood pressure, lipids and inflammation. The findings presented in this thesis enhance our understanding of the health benefits of apples and add to growing evidence supporting the rationale to recommend increased consumption of apples as a means of reducing cardiovascular disease burden. Our results
suggest that apples as a whole are more beneficial than isolated apple flavonoids.
