Abstract

My dissertation uses conventional genre theory and recent publications to make the case that literary fiction is not categorised by intrinsic, essential qualities but is the product of unspoken agreement among authors and publishers, booksellers and
buyers. I discuss recent literary WOfks that exhibit various aspects of more and less speculative forms to consider whether nonrealist fictions might be on the rise and conclude my thesis by considering whether cross-genre fictions are making a substantial contribution to contemporary lilerary fiction. The creative component of this thesis, my novel The Art of Navigation, contributes to this rich body of literature.
