Abstract

This thesis investigates the possibility of resonant coupling between terahertz (THz) radiation and nucleoside and nucleotides in aqueous solution. THz absorption spectra were collected via THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Spectral features were analysed and interpreted with supporting data from complementary experimental techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results complete a crucial gap in THz research on nucleic acids, provide further insights into the nature of THz vibrations, and points to potentially fruitful research areas for the future.
