    Abstract

Tendons are strong cords of fibrous tissue that attach muscles to bones. The quadriceps and patellar tendons also play a vital role in the function of the knee joint. Injuries to these tendons generally require a significant tensile force but can also occur as a result of chronic inflammation or systemic diseases causing weakened tendons. A complete tear is considered a disabling injury and often requires surgery to regain complete function. Timely diagnosis is critical to achieving best outcomes, which relies upon good history taking, examination and appropriate imaging. The nature and size of the tear, amount of tendon retraction and patient’s premorbid function are all important factors in determining the safest and most effective treatment. This chapter focuses on common injuries to the patella, quadriceps and hamstring tendons.
