Abstract

Ytterbium metal reacts with thallium(I) 3,5-diphenylpyrazolate, or with diphenylmercury and 3,5-diphenylpyrazole (Ph(2)pzH) in tetrahydrofuran or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) giving, after appropriate isolation, the first lanthanoid(ll) pyrazolate complex, [Yb(Ph(2)pz)(2)(DME)(2)]. The molecular structure reveals eight coordinate ytterbium(II) with two cisoid eta(2)-3,5-diphenylpyrazolate and two chelating 1,2-dimethoxyethane ligands.
