Abstract

This thesis focuses on synthesis and biological investigation of new gold(I)-NHC complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) .The new complexes include analogs of well-known gold(I) drug auranofin of form (NHC)AuX, built from a range of imidazolium salts that have a pendant acetyl-protected carbohydrate group. The synthesis and characterization of these complexes were discussed in detail. Anti-cancer activity of these gold complexes was extensively investigated via Cellavista essays and CyTOF techniques, using tumorogenic and non-tumorogenic liver (BMOL) cell lines. Anti-microbial activity of the new complexes was also briefly studied and discussed.
