    Abstract

This thesis investigates incorporation of cerium into iron garnet thin films deposited on cost-effective non-garnet substrates for enhanced magneto-optic properties in the blue and infrared (at 1550 nm) wavelength regions. Thin films based on bismuth, cerium, dysprosium, europium, gallium and iron were synthesized using biased target ion beam deposition. High concentrations of cerium were successfully incorporated in garnet structure via introduction of europium and annealing. At 1550 nm, CeEuGalG film on fused quartz yielded high Faraday rotation while CeEuGalG on GGG yielded nearly square hysteresis loop with one of the highest reported magneto-optic figures of merit.
