Abstract

Western Australia has long experience with extractives and their regulation. WA has many commendable laws, balancing mining’s benefits and impacts. But changes - social and technological - mean regulation from an earlier time and context may not be fit for purpose. Additionally, contemporary guidance (from international standards and leading industry practise) emphasise increased attention to sustainable development. Two 2020 publications (from UNDP and OECD) have relevance for the extractives sector and its regulation, emphasising focus on more than just the physical and financial ability to extract resources.
