Abstract

This blog tells the story of Maud Preece, a young girl who was arrested in Chester, England in 1599 for stealing a hat. She had been brought to the city as a very young child and then abandoned by the adults who had brought her. Maud relied on begging, charity and crime to survive, which left her vulnerable to exploitation by adults.
