Summer physical processes along the continental shelf and slope off southern Western Australia

    Abstract

    The circulation along the southern Western Australia shelf is documented using field data collected during a research voyage in April 2006. This paper presents CTD and ADCP data to provide a description of surface circulation patterns along southern Western Australia continental shelf which is poorly understood mainly due to a lack of field data. There are three main current systems in the region; Leeuwin Current, and Flinders Current and the wind driven Cresswell Current. Due to the prevailing westerly winds during the field data collection the Cresswell current was not present. The Leeuwin Current begins in the north- west region of Western Australia and transports lower salinity water of tropical origin southwards along the west coast, turns eastwards at Cape Leeuwin moves along the south coast onto the Great Australian Bight (GAB). Entrainment of higher salinity water onto the LC along the west coast changes its T/S characteristics as it enters the south coast. The Flinders Current flows opposite to the direction of the Leeuwin Current with maximum currents of 0.6m/s. It is located further offshore and beneath the LC along the south coast and provides the source water (Subantarctic Mode Water, SAWM) for the Leeuwin Undercurrent along the west coast.
