Study and development of memristor applications

    Abstract

    [Truncated] This thesis examines the characteristics of memristors through the development of circuits that emulate memristive behaviours and using these circuits to develop new memristor based applications.
    Memristors have become known the missing fourth passive element, to be grouped together with the other three core passive elements; resistors, capacitors and inductors. Memristors were postulated by L.O. Chua in 1971 [1]. In 2008, researchers in Hewlett-Packard announced they had developed a solid state implementation of a memristor [2].
    This announcement caused a flurry of research activity into memristors. The initial hurdle being no physical memristors were available for researchers to study, the situation is the same at the time of writing.
    This meant researchers needed to develop memristor emulators, based upon theoretical descriptions, in order to study memristors and their characteristics.
