Abstract

The El Indio Belt (EIB) is a gold-rich province in the Andes Cordillera (Chile-Argentina), hosting >50 Moz Au in Upper Miocene phreatomagmatic and vein-type HS to LS epithermal deposits. This investigation focuses on the determination of the regional controls on the location of large Au deposits. By means of the integration of regional and detailed structural mapping, zircon Hf-O isotopes and geophysical interpretation, this study demonstrates that large Au concentrations result from the interaction of a favorable tectonostratigraphic architecture, geodynamic trigger, and fertile magmas. It confirms that the Mineral Systems hypothesis is applicable to this Au-endowed segment of the Andes.
