Abstract

This paper presents and discusses results from recent laboratory research into the properties of a hard lodgement till underlying the Dublin area in Ireland. Attention is focused primarily on establishing the compressibility and effective stress strength parameters of the reconstituted and intact material and on investigating the influence of the previous direction of loading on the shear stiffness characteristics. The BRICK constitutive soil model is shown to capture many important features of the till's behaviour and recommendations for material parameters to be employed with this model are provided.
