Abstract

This thesis comprises three studies guided by the broad aim of exploring sport participation and experiences for children in out-of-home care. The first study is a systematic review on physical activity interventions for mental health outcomes in at-risk young people, the second is a qualitative exploration of carers’ perspectives on children in care’s engagement in sport, and the third is a mixed-methods investigation of strategies for improving sport opportunities, participation, and experiences for children in care. Findings from this thesis have significant practical implications, advocating for change to promote inclusion and opportunities in sport for children in out-of-homecare.
