Abstract
Over the past few decades, several methods for fitting smooth curves to data have been proposed and intensively studied. Among these methods are kernel smoothers, orthogonal series estimators, wavelet smoothers, and spline smoothers. This entry provides a brief description of the commonly used spline smoothers – regression splines, smoothing splines, and penalized splines.
