Abstract

Well defined eddies were frequently observed during cruises by R.V. Sprightly off Western Australia during 1973–76. Mean normalized scalar products of all pairs of the surface current vectors recorded on these cruises indicated that eddies with diameters of about 140 km were dominating the surface circulation during the three summers for which data were available. Eddies were only occasionally observed during the winter months and appeared to be less influential on the surface circulation structure.
