Secondary metabolites from Western Australian fungal species

    Abstract

    [Truncated] The aims of the present study were to extend the study of secondary metabolites obtained from fungi collected in Western Australia. A number of fungi isolated from local sources were screened for activity towards nematodes, for antifungal and enzymatic activities. Some of the more interesting ones were selected and a study of the metabolites produced by these fungi was initiated.The culture medium of a Byssochlamys nivea Westling isolate was found to totally inhibit the growth of the several fungal phytopathogens and to cause rapid mortality of the test nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Four metabolites were extracted from the culture medium of this isolate. Patulin, byssochlamic acid and gentisyl alcohol were identified from their spectroscopic properties. X-ray diffraction studies of one of the metabolites established it to be pyrenophorol. A compound found in samples of patulin was shown by x-ray diffraction to be a photodimer.
