Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a biphasic vasoproliferative disease that has the potential to cause blindness. This thesis investigates whether placental inflammation and poor weight gain can help predict infants who may develop vision-threatening ROP. Second, it explores the potential of using wide-field digital imaging by non ophthalmologists to identify infants who require treatment and evaluates the evidence for using artificial intelligence for ROP diagnosis. Furthermore, this thesis examines the best approach for ROP screening in low- to middle-income countries where ROP is a significant problem. Overall, this thesis aims to improve ROP screening while reducing the burden on ophthalmologists.
