Abstract
Between 1859 and 1861, the discovery of the oilfields of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia influenced the birth and the development of industrial oil production all over the world. Since 1861, the know-how and innovation developed in the USA began to travel to Europe along together with millions of barrels of oil and the echoes of the large wealth that this business was generating. It is in this context that in Italy, as in the rest of Europe, the first seeds of the nascent oil society sprout. The first Italian region to mature an industrial production of oil was Emilia Romagna, followed by Abruzzo, and finally Lazio with particular reference to the so-called “Ripi Mine”, located near Ripi village, in the San Giovanni - Petroglie area. This site is one of the oldest oil fields discovered in Italy, the production concession of which still formally exists, after various events, since 11 March 1868
