Abstract
Raises historiographical issues regarding the development of the history of Catholic religious teachers in England. Small body of research on history of the lives of teaching religious within context of the history of teachers in general; Growth of Catholic orders of teaching religous as an outcome of political, social and economic action on the part of the institutional Church; Problematization of popular categories used when speaking of the teaching religious.
