Reproduction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference paperChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter outlines details and differences in reproductive processes between a number of abalone species in their natural environments, with occasional comments about reproduction in hatcheries. It is not the intention of this chapter to detail the anatomy of the abalone reproductive system because this is described in Chapter 3, or to describe hatchery-rearing techniques, as these are discussed in Chapter 11. Some of the terms used in abalone reproductive processes are defined, and the various phases of the reproductive process are described for the better-known abalone species worldwide. The various factors that affect the regulation of reproduction are described, and factors that influence reproductive success are discussed.
