Abstract

Hungarian-born composer Gyorgy Kurtag (b.1926) is an intriguing and enigmatic figure of Western Art Music. Through a re-examination of the primary source material in which Kurtag speaks at length about his music, this thesis will present a renewed understanding of his compositional philosophies, approach and process. The manifestation of these concepts in Kurtag's musical language will be examined, using some key works as examples, including Signs, Games and Messages. In explicating the nexus between Kurtag's compositional philosophies and his music, this thesis aims to provide a more holistic view of Kurtag as a composer.
