Abstract

Railway crossings are an integral part of transport networks in many countries. Over the past few decades, a number of studies focused on them. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of research on railway crossings and presents the efforts that have been made to improve railway crossing safety. It begins with an introduction of traffic control methods and intelligent devices used at operational railway crossings. Then, it reviews the impacts of railway crossings on safety and provides a guideline for designing a safe crossing. Finally, this chapter outlines the current solutions and policies implemented in various countries to improve the safety of road users and to maintain the operating efficiency of road networks.
